LIA, PROFESORA DE INGLÉS, RECOMÉNDANOS ESTA LECTURA. ESTÁ NA BIBLIOTECA!

Today I’d like to tell you about one of my favourite books, a bestseller and a favourite in classrooms. It’s Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night.

Reading this book, I felt I could really understand the mind of an autistic child. This compelling story is told from the perspective of Christopher Boone’s perspective. He’s a 15-year-old with an exceptional talent for math but significant struggles with social interaction. His quest to solve the mystery of a neighbour’s dead dog takes us on a journey far beyond a simple detective story, delving into family relationships, trust, and self-discovery.

The novel’s huge success lies in its unique narrator and the way it combines simplicity with emotional depth. Christopher’s perspective feels authentic and will give you a glimpse into how someone on the autism spectrum might experience the world. His fresh and honest voice has resonated with readers worldwide.

Students of English as a foreign language will find a balance of challenge and ease. Though written in very straightforward verbal tenses—mostly the simple present and simple past— its vocabulary can be quite sophisticated. Terms related to mathematics, emotions and even the British culture give us rich opportunities to expand our lexicon.

Lastly, the book’s physical layout makes it even more appealing. I really like the fact that chapters are numbered using prime numbers, a quirky and clever nod to Christopher’s mathematical mind. We find plenty of Illustrations, diagrams, and charts that clarify complex ideas and add a visual element that breaks up the text. The clean and minimalistic design of the pages ensures readability, and the compact chapters make it less intimidating for intermediate readers while keeping advanced students engaged.

This is a novel that educates, entertains, and inspires reflection. It’s perfect addition to any English classroom and you can find it here, both at the libraries of the EOI de Vigo and its extension in Tui.

Happy  reading!
